Sometimes roots of teeth can be exposed through the gum tissue. This can cause an esthetic concern as the teeth may appear “long”, or can cause pain/discomfort if the root is sensitive to hot or cold. Gums may recede for a variety of reasons, but your periodontist will help you identify the reason and will help to prevent future recession. Afterwards, you may be a candidate to have a soft tissue graft to cover exposed roots, and to prevent additional recession and bone loss.
For soft tissue grafting, tissue is taken from the roof of your mouth or other source and secures it in the affected site with stitches. The can be performed for a single tooth, or several teeth at once, to even the gumline and reduce sensitivity.
Soft tissue grafting can help to improve both your smile and oral health.
