In some cases, bone loss around a tooth happens in such a way that it may be possible to “re-grow” tissues to support the tooth. This procedure is also done with local freezing and sedation if requested. The gums are opened to permit better access to clean the tooth root and eroded bone. Graft materials are placed in the area of lost bone. Various grafting materials can be used and may include your own bone, synthetic bone substitutes or bone obtained from tissue banks. Gums are sutured back into position over the materials and allowed to heal for several months. This procedure is only successful in patients performing excellent oral hygiene.
